St. Augustine's Ultimate Offshore Fishing Adventure

Ready for a full day of rod-bending action off the coast of St. Augustine? Captain Troy's got you covered with this all-day fishing trip that'll have you reeling in everything from hard-fighting amberjack to toothy barracuda. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting your sea legs, this is your chance to experience some of the best offshore fishing Florida's Historic Coast has to offer.

What's in Store for You

We'll push off early, so grab your coffee and sunscreen. As we cruise out of the inlet, you'll see St. Augustine's skyline fade into the distance. Once we hit our offshore spots, it's game on. We'll be targeting a mix of reef fish and pelagics, so be ready for anything. The beauty of a full day trip is we've got time to try different techniques and locations. Expect to do some bottom fishing for snappers and triggerfish, then switch it up with some trolling for kings and 'cudas. Captain Troy knows these waters like the back of his hand, so you're in for a day of non-stop action.

Gearing Up for the Big Ones

No need to lug your tackle box – we've got you covered with top-notch gear that's up to the task. We'll be using a mix of conventional and spinning setups, depending on what we're after. For bottom fishing, we'll drop down with sturdy conventional rods and braided line to muscle those amberjack off the structure. When we switch to trolling, we'll break out the lighter spinning gear for kings and barracuda. Captain Troy's always got a few tricks up his sleeve, so don't be surprised if we break out the live bait for some exciting topwater action. Just remember, when that drag starts screaming, hold on tight!

Species You'll Want to Hook

Greater Amberjack: These bruisers are the heavyweights of the reef, and they fight like it too. Known as "reef donkeys" among anglers, AJs can top 100 pounds and will test your stamina. They hang around wrecks and deep structure, so when we drop down, be ready for a battle. Best time to target them is late spring through fall, and trust me, once you've tangled with one, you'll be hooked.

Great Barracuda: With their menacing teeth and lightning-fast strikes, 'cudas are the adrenaline junkies of the ocean. We'll troll for these speedsters with flashy lures or live bait. They're here year-round, but the bite really heats up in summer. When a barracuda hits, it's like a freight train – hold on and enjoy the ride!

Red Snapper: These tasty bottom-dwellers are the prize of many an angler. We'll drop down to rocky bottoms and reefs to find them. Red snapper season is strictly regulated, so we'll only target them when it's open. But when it is, get ready for some of the best-eating fish in the sea. They put up a good fight too, especially the bigger ones.

Ocean Triggerfish: Don't let their small size fool you – triggerfish are feisty little guys with a big appetite. We'll find them around the same reefs as snapper, usually in shallower water. They're fun to catch on lighter tackle and make for some excellent eating. Plus, their unique shape and vibrant colors make for great photos.

Northern Kingfish: When we're trolling, keep an eye out for the signature skyrocketing jumps of kingfish. These sleek predators are known for their blistering runs and aerial acrobatics. Spring and fall are prime time for kings, but we can catch them year-round. There's nothing quite like watching a king smoke a blue runner off the back of the boat.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

St. Augustine's offshore waters are a fish-filled playground, and Captain Troy knows just how to make the most of it. With a full day on the water, we've got time to really explore and find where the fish are biting. Maybe we'll start with some bottom fishing, then run-and-gun for pelagics in the afternoon. Or if the bite is hot, we might just hunker down on a productive spot. The variety keeps things interesting – one minute you're cranking up a grouper, the next you're locked in battle with a speeding king. And let's not forget the views – there's something special about watching the sun climb over the Atlantic as you're heading out to your fishing grounds.

Time to Book Your Spot

If you're itching to bend a rod and fill the cooler, this is the trip for you. With room for up to three anglers, it's perfect for a group of buddies or the family. Remember, all the gear is provided, so you just need to show up ready for action. Keep in mind there might be some extra fees for fuel – the big fish don't always live close to shore! Don't miss out on this chance to experience some of the best fishing St. Augustine has to offer. Whether you're after your personal best or just want to enjoy a day on the water, Captain Troy will put you on the fish. So what are you waiting for? Book your spot now and get ready for a day of offshore action you won't forget!

Learn more about the species

Great Barracuda

Great Barracuda are the speedsters of the sea, sleek and mean-looking with a mouthful of razor teeth. They average 2-4 feet but can hit 6 feet and 60 pounds. You'll spot them near reefs, wrecks, and channel edges, often just below the surface. These predators are around all year, but fishing heats up in summer. Anglers love 'cuda for their explosive strikes and acrobatic jumps when hooked. They're not the best eating, but the fight makes up for it. When targeting them, I like to use shiny tube lures or live bait like mullet or pinfish. Cast near structure and retrieve fast - barracuda love to chase. Watch those teeth when unhooking them though. A wire leader is a must, or they'll slice through mono like butter. Nothing gets the heart pumping like a big 'cuda blasting your bait on top.

Great Barracuda

Greater Amberjack

Greater Amberjack are hefty fish, often hitting 30-40 pounds with some monsters pushing 100. You'll find them hanging around reefs and wrecks 60-240 feet deep. These bruisers love structure, so we target spots with good relief. Spring and fall are prime times, but we catch 'em year-round. Anglers love Amberjack for their hard-fighting nature - they'll test your arms and your gear. Their meat is good eating too, firm and mild. When you hook one, be ready for a battle. They'll try to dive back to structure, so you need to turn them quick. I like using live bait like blue runners or speedo mackerel. Jigs work well too. Just remember, these fish have serious power, so come prepared with stout tackle. The thrill of wrestling one of these to the boat is something you won't forget.

Greater Amberjack

Northern Kingfish

Northern Kingfish are scrappy little bottom-dwellers, usually 10-14 inches long. You'll find them in the surf zone and nearshore waters, often right in the wash. They love sandy or muddy bottoms where they can root for food. Late summer and early fall are prime times when they move close to shore. Anglers enjoy kingfish for their willingness to bite and their tasty white meat. Light tackle's the way to go - a simple bottom rig with small hooks works great. For bait, try bits of shrimp, squid, or bloodworms. Here's a local tip: look for them around sandbars and troughs in the surf. Cast out and slowly drag your bait along the bottom. When you feel that telltale thump, set the hook quick. They might be small, but Northern Kingfish put up a fun fight on light gear.

Northern Kingfish

Ocean Triggerfish

Ocean Triggerfish are quirky little fighters, usually 1-2 feet long and shaped like a frisbee. You'll find them around reefs and wrecks in 30-300 feet of water. They're here year-round, but fishing's best in warmer months. Anglers get a kick out of triggers for their strange looks and surprisingly strong fight for their size. They taste great too - sweet, firm meat. When targeting them, I use light tackle with small hooks. Squid or cut bait works well. Here's the trick: triggers have tiny mouths, so use just enough bait to cover the hook. They're notorious bait stealers, so be ready to set the hook quick. Watch out for that dorsal spine when you bring 'em in - they can lock it up tight. Triggers might not be the biggest fish out there, but they're a blast to catch.

Ocean Triggerfish

Red Snapper

Red Snapper are prized catches, known for their bright red color and tasty white meat. They typically run 5-20 pounds but can reach 30+. You'll find them around reefs and wrecks in 60-300 feet of water. Summer's the best time as they move closer to shore to spawn. Snapper fishing's all about finding the right spot - they like to hug structure. Once you're on 'em, they can bite like crazy. Anglers love snapper for the challenge of getting them off the bottom and their excellent table fare. When targeting them, I use heavy spinning gear with 50-80 pound braid. Fresh cut bait like cigar minnows or squid works great. Here's a pro tip: when you feel the bite, reel fast and set the hook hard. You've got to turn their heads before they dive back into the structure and break you off.
